【3D Printing Application】Mini Jurassic Park! Articulated Structure Requires No Support!

Children's Day is just around the corner. Have you thought about what gifts to prepare for your kids? Quickly 3D print an articulated dinosaur to create the coolest gift! Even if you don't have children, you can still embrace your inner child. Let's take a look at our crazy T-Rex in action:

Now, let me introduce this articulated mini-dinosaur that requires no support material, and also help you become more familiar with the new version of Cura 4.0. There are many more dinosaur models available online, so you can download 3D models according to your preferences. (Further reading: Free Resources, No Reservations! Here are the Top 5 3D Model Libraries!)

How is this articulated structure made? Why doesn't it need support? If we put it into Cura 4.0, we can see the layered slicing of the object and the 3D printing process. You can see that the articulated structure uses horizontal rods passing through holes to interlock. The overhanging parts, due to their gradual angle, small drop, and small size, prevent the PLA from sagging. The design utilizes a concept similar to a chain, with enough space reserved in the middle, allowing the 3D printed object to be articulated even without PVA support.

We chose a Triceratops and a T-Rex and 3D printed them using single PLA filament in a dual-extrusion system. They look very mini inside the extra-large Ultimaker S5, and each dinosaur takes about two hours to print.

You can play with them directly after taking them out. The two dinosaurs look simple and cute, but their designs are full of clever details, such as expressions made with eyebrows or the scales on the T-Rex's back. The precision performance of Ultimaker allows us to present these details to you.

If you want to use it as a keychain, you can drill a hole in the tail yourself, or there are many cute versions online with hats and bows. Quickly choose your favorite as your Children's Day gift!

Although this 3D printed model has an articulated structure, it is still very stable when standing. There's a clever little triangular detail at the bottom that makes the 3D printed object stand more firmly. If the 3D printed object is not printed with the bottom facing down, you can design an inner arc or groove at the bottom; this can prevent undulations on the standing surface from affecting balance and allow the object to stand more stably anywhere, just like the concave bottom of a wine bottle.

Don't let your little T-Rex at home be unhappy on Children's Day. Print your own mini Jurassic Park now with a 3D printer! Or you could also consider a 3D printing pen that's safe for children to use, allowing them to unleash their creativity.
