The Ultimaker S5 has been certified by Materialise as a 3D printer compatible with Mimics inPrint medical software, which is used to create clinical orthopedic, maxillofacial, and cardiovascular models. The two companies collaborated to ensure good compatibility between the Ultimaker S5 and Materialise's Mimics inPrint software, in compliance with FDA regulatory guidelines for clinical 3D printing.

While free and commercial medical imaging software is becoming increasingly available, under strict standards, diagnostic models sold must be produced using FDA-certified software. For example, Materialise's Mimics inPrint is the first 3D printing software to receive FDA certification. Materialise chose to partner with Ultimaker 3D printers to foster a safe, stable, and user-friendly 3D printing environment for patient care. To date, 16 out of the top 20 hospitals in the United States use this software.
Brian, Materialise's North America General Manager, stated, "Our collaboration with Ultimaker will enhance the applicability of 3D printed anatomical models to assist with surgical planning and integrated team communication." The Ultimaker S5 is capable of mass-producing life-size 3D printed anatomical models, opening doors for patient care and medical communication.

As the use of 3D printing in treatment planning and diagnostics grows, many hospitals recognize that physical anatomical models can help diagnose patients, plan surgical procedures, and discuss treatment methods that would otherwise rely on 2D images. "With FDA certification, medical systems can be more confident in the safety and quality of these 3D printing processes when Mimics inPrint is used with Ultimaker," emphasized John, Ultimaker's North America President.
