【3D Printing Applications】NTUT Interaction Design Exhibition, Matte Filaments First Look!

Following the Young Designers' Exhibition, we are now heading to Songshan Cultural and Creative Park with National Taipei University of Technology! The graduation exhibition of NTUT's Department of Interaction Design uses "Interactive Lab" as its theme, featuring works centered around VR, AR, apps, games, interactive installations, and projection art. There will also be four Ultimaker 3D printers performing live printing!

In this interactive lab-themed experience exhibition, you can see many abstract spheres created with 3D printing, using the light and shadow properties of different filaments to create a sense of movement. Let's share how these spherical particles, which embody both balance and abstraction, are produced. These particles visually represent restlessness and vivacity. Since their basic shape is a perfect sphere, we cut them in half for 3D printing, which not only saves a lot of support material but also shortens the printing time. The 7cm diameter spheres appear very tiny in the large Ultimaker S5.

To create the interleaved light and shadow effects, in addition to Ultimaker's black PLA filament, we also used Spider Maker's matte black PLA this time. Our tests showed that matte black PLA adheres more tightly to the print bed, so as you can see in Cura, we added an extra layer of PVA at the bottom for 3D printing. You can also use this little trick! (Further reading: Ultimaker Cura: Advanced Tips)

Comparing the effects of the two PLAs, the 3D printed product on the left in the image below uses matte black, exhibiting a matte texture and soft light and shadow, without the reflective light of the Ultimaker black PLA product on the right. Both filaments have their unique advantages; matte black is more suitable for products requiring elegance and low reflectivity, while regular PLA has a glossy finish.

We are honored that the quality of Ultimaker 3D printers has been recognized by many future designers. We provided high-quality 3D printing services to create these installations for them. At the exhibition, you can not only touch these particles but also witness the 3D printing process live. Only three days left for early bird tickets! Buying tickets now is the most cost-effective way to support the students!
