【3D Printing Applications】 Application examples of 3D printed metal materials!

This application concept was designed by Steve Cox of AMFORi to demonstrate one of many ways that metal FFF technology can improve existing processes.

Leveraging his experience working with partners across various industries, Steve identified a valuable use case that utilizes the unique advantages of metal printing on UltiMaker printers.

Challenge

The larger the surface area of a heat exchanger, the more efficiently it can transfer heat. Manufacturing highly efficient metal heat exchangers in a compact form factor presents a challenge with traditional manufacturing techniques.

Solution

Additive manufacturing technology (FFF/FDM) can create parts with novel internal geometries that are difficult or impossible to produce otherwise.

This conceptual part is a three-in-one compact, single-piece heat exchanger designed for thermal management in the smallest possible form factor. The optimized internal geometry of this part significantly improves efficiency compared to heat exchangers using traditional designs (such as shell-and-tube or plate heat exchangers).

Such complex internal geometries, maximizing surface area, are only achievable through metal 3D printing.

The internal curved fin geometry of this part is designed to maximize the model's surface area, thereby increasing heat transfer capability. The part has almost no overhangs, eliminating the need for structural support material.

As a result, the part is reliable and easy to print, while also being easier to post-process. Since it is metal 3D printed, it can also operate at high temperatures without issues.

Metal 3D Printing Becomes Accessible

This section demonstrates the many ways metal 3D printing can achieve breakthrough results in small part production.
