High-quality 3D prints from FFF/FDM 3D printers rely on this crucial 3D printing accessory - the 3D print bed!
But with so many types, how do you choose? As a beginner to 3D printing, let's explore the common types and differences of print beds, using Bambu Lab's print beds as an example:
1️⃣ Cool Plate
The Bambu Cool Plate consists of a cool plate sticker and a Bambu Engineering Plate, both sides of which can be used for printing.
The cool plate sticker has a smooth surface and is attached to the engineering plate with 3M high-temperature resistant double-sided adhesive.
It is only suitable for printing PLA materials. Other materials (such as PETG, ABS) are prone to warping and strong adhesion issues.
📄 Material: PC
🔗 Adhesive: Required
☑️ Applicable materials: PLA

2️⃣ High-Temperature Plate
The Bambu High-Temperature Plate also consists of a high-temperature plate sticker and an engineering plate, both sides of which can be used for printing.
The high-temperature sticker has a smooth surface with a fine matte texture, and is attached to the engineering plate with 3M high-temperature resistant double-sided adhesive. Compared to the PC film of the Cool Plate, PEI material has better heat resistance and is less prone to creep at high temperatures, hence better material compatibility.
📄 Material: PEI
🔗 Adhesive: Required
☑️ Applicable materials: PLA, PLA-CF, ABS, PETG, TPU, ASA, PVA, PC, PC-CF, PA, etc.

3️⃣ Engineering Plate
The Engineering Plate is made by spray-coating a special thermosetting layer onto flexible steel. This coating is more durable than PC and PEI films, making it ideal for printing engineering materials.
The disadvantage of this print bed is that it requires strict use of adhesive during printing, otherwise, insufficient adhesion may occur, leading to print failure.
📄 Material: Steel
🔗 Adhesive: Required
☑️ Applicable materials: ABS, PETG, TPU, ASA, PVA, PC, PC-CF, PA, etc.

4️⃣ Dual-Sided Textured PEI Plate
The Dual-Sided Textured PEI Plate is made by powder-coating a layer of PEI powder onto a stainless steel plate. Its biggest feature is its unique rough texture, which also gives the printed part a similar texture on the bottom surface.
The PEI coating on the Dual-Sided Textured PEI Plate is very durable, so it has a long lifespan. The disadvantage is the rough texture, which may lead to risks of flow calibration failure or first layer scanning failure.
📄 Material: Stainless steel + PEI
🔗 Adhesive: Depends on material
☑️ Applicable materials: PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, ASA, PVA, PC, PA, etc.

There are many different types of print beds available, and you can choose the right one based on the material requirements for your prints. If this article has been helpful to you, please save it or click to discuss with us!
