【3D Printing Application】3D Prints at Fashion Week: Breathable Athletic Functionality, No Cutting, Zero Waste!

Fashion brand "ZER Collection" showcased 12 3D-printed garments at the 2020 Madrid Fashion Week. Utilizing 3D printing technology, the clothing not only achieved a "fashionable and aesthetic" effect but also possessed "breathable" and "elastic" athletic functionality. Through digital production, the brand also successfully addressed the waste problem of up to 30% of fabric being trimmed and discarded during traditional garment design:

.Elastic Fabric 3D Prints: Breathable, Comfortable, and Stylish
The "ZER Collection" team used 3D printing technology to design both the base and decorative fabrics for their works. The base fabric was not made by connecting small parts but by directly 3D printing elastic fabric. Since the fabric directly touches the human body, the team considered the issue of wearing comfort and specifically chose TPU flexible material to produce the base fabric for each garment.

The decorative designs on the surface of the clothing can also be combined with fabrics like cotton, knitwear, and silk using 3D printing to create various structured shapes. This preserves the model's body curves while providing breathability and fabric韧性 (resilience), ensuring comfortable wear for extended periods.

The team mainly uses the IDEX independent dual extruders of the BCN3D 3D printer to produce garment accessories. The equipment has two completely separate extruder systems that can move independently without mutual interference. This allows for printing two different colors or materials on the fabric at once and accelerates the efficiency of each 3D printing run, saving time spent on repeated testing and revising designer ideas. .Print Only What's Needed, No Cutting, Zero Waste
According to brand founder and designer Núria Costa, typically up to 30% of the fabric used in garment design is trimmed away, leading to a significant amount of material waste over time. However, by incorporating 3D printing technology into production, only the "necessary" fabric is produced each time. This not only eliminates the need for fabric trimming and improves efficiency but also results in zero material waste!

Moreover, to further reduce material waste, the "ZER Collection" team recycled all previously used old clothing and fabrics, melting the plastic into recycled 3D printing filament, which was then reused in new products. Through 3D printing technology, this not only promotes sustainable development across the fashion industry, but the team also continues to research, striving for the goal of designing each garment without generating any waste!

"ZER Collection" continues to develop methods combining fashion with new technologies, hoping that in the future, besides 3D printing technology, they can also integrate laser cutting, human 3D scanning, and more into garment production. As technology continuously advances, it's very encouraging to see more and more fields, with their respective expertise and passion, combine different technologies to create higher brand value.
