【3D Printing Application】Dubai's New Landmark: A Curved,镂空 New Building!

Revolutionizing traditional architectural model-making! How did Dubai's architectural design team use 3D printing to create world-renowned landmarks?

Over the past two decades, the maturation of CAD 3D modeling and construction techniques has given architects more design freedom; greatly enhancing design quality, allowing for more flexible application of curved surfaces, and promoting the development of construction companies. Killa Design in Dubai is committed to unique and sustainable architectural design, but how do they use 3D printing technology to complete many challenging structures?

Curved Architecture
From a design and construction perspective, buildings with complex shapes present enormous challenges, and designers must fully understand the building's structure and form. Therefore, a scaled model of the building is first made, but for complex structural designs—like the "Museum of the Future" in the video—using traditional model-making methods is not only inefficient but sometimes impossible.

Creating a New Landmark
The "Museum of the Future" is a proposal by Dubai's "Dubai Future Foundation," a project initiated by the then-ruler of the "United Arab Emirates." The "Museum of the Future" has a total height of 78 meters, an elliptical shape, and entirely curved lines, set to become a famous local landmark. Through 3D printed cross-section models, the internal space planning of the museum can be clearly seen, allowing for the integration of cleaning routes and corridors; the other half of the cross-section model is used to explore the overall structure. Therefore, using 3D printing for architectural planning is both feasible and efficient.

Printing Future Buildings
The world's first "Office of the Future" is an office building planned to be constructed using large-scale 3D printing, a monumental engineering feat. First, Killa Design had to design a structure that could actually be built using 3D printing under specific constraints. 3D printed buildings require a large amount of concrete, which is poured into giant 3D printers to begin printing and assembly on site. When Killa Design started using Ultimaker 3D printers, they could more efficiently produce structural components, even in Dubai's high ambient temperatures of up to 45°C.

Innovative Concepts, Practical Production
To meet the demand for numerous conceptual models, Killa Design continuously produces creative modules and validates concepts using Ultimaker 3D printers. To prevent hollow floor slabs from falling to the bottom, designers use water-soluble support PVA during 3D printing. Since dual-extruder 3D printers can use two materials, architects can create any desired shape. After printing, architects simply immerse the finished product in tap water, and it will dissolve on its own, speeding up the design process.

Impossible Mission
Another project by the company, "SRG Tower," is a 111-story residential skyscraper located in the heart of Dubai. The entire building's exterior is covered with solar panels, generating electricity using climatic characteristics, while two wind turbines are installed on the top floor, capable of supplying 500 megawatts of power.

This is an unprecedented breakthrough, and installing two wind turbines on the top floor is an immense challenge. They 3D printed a scaled model of the "SRG Tower" to accurately plan the feasibility of the external structure. Engineers also analyzed 3D printed modules and proposed a final solution for installing the generators.
