【3D Printing Application】Metal Slug Tank! Jumping out of the game to "play it for real"!

In the era before mobile games, single-player games accompanied many through their childhoods. This time, we're using 3D printing to revisit a classic game: Metal Slug! Do you still remember these classic game scenes? The best part before fighting the big boss in each level was getting equipment. This time, we're bringing this classic American tank off the small screen.

This time, we disassembled the object for 3D printing, with a precision of 0.15mm. Placing the file into Cura automatically calculates the support material's growth, which is very convenient as no additional modeling is needed. Also, the latest version of Cura 3.6 allows for custom support structure settings. (Further reading: New Look for the New Year! 3 Major Innovations in Cura 4.0 Beta!)

The 3D printers used were the Ultimaker S5 and Ultimaker 3, primarily using PLA for the main body paired with PVA water-soluble support. Both the Ultimaker S5 and Ultimaker 3 are dual-extrusion systems, allowing for simultaneous printing with two materials. The total 3D printing time after splitting the parts was approximately two days. The 3D-printed tank was completely encased in PVA. After placing it in water and waiting for the PVA to fully dissolve, the parts can be assembled, making it convenient and fast—a great helper for lazy post-processing.

The tank wheels are astonishingly detailed. Besides the design on the wheel rims, even the connecting structure of the chains is very clear, and the hollow structure of the launcher barrel is also very distinct.

The thin-shell shape of the exhaust pipe at the rear is also reproduced, and it even has a slight translucency. How thin is it? It measures about 0.5mm, and its curvature is perfectly intact.

The assembled finished product has a volume of approximately 20cm x 23cm x 26cm (excluding the printing volume of the PVA filament). The silver PLA used has a metallic texture, perfectly complementing the tank's realistic feel.
