【3D Printing Application】Classic Scenes Come to Life!3D Printed Animation Machine!

When we were kids watching cartoons, we always remembered some classic scenes, like Popeye, Dragon Ball, etc. This time, we're going to use a 3D printer to create our own rotating animation, recreating a classic scene from The Lion King! Below are illustrated principles and instructions, guiding you step-by-step. Hakuna Matata!

3D Printed Animation Frame

First, we use an Ultimaker 3D printer to print out all the parts of the animation machine. For this project, we chose PLA material with water-soluble support PVA. After dissolving, it achieves precise dimensions and a clean surface.

Remember to adjust the precision of your 3D printer, as the animation frame is assembled using pins. If it's too tight, it won't assemble; if it's too loose, it won't hold the frame structure and won't rotate. So, the dimensions must be printed very accurately.

.Creating the Frames

Next, let's understand the principle of animation. It involves a series of sequential actions that create continuous motion. A one-second animation typically requires 24 frames for smooth movement. This rotating animation machine has 30 slots on its side, so it can play a little more than one second of animation. Since the animation machine connects images top and bottom, for frame sequence 1, 2, 3, for example, the frames need to be cut horizontally during layout. If it's still difficult, just follow the concept of "top half of the next page + bottom half of the previous page" as shown in the last image! Before printing the frames, remember to arrange them according to the instructions in the diagram below for success!

The best part is choosing your favorite animation! This time, we chose the classic animation: The Lion King, capturing one second of video and breaking it down into 30 still frames. After arranging them as described above, print them out, fold and glue them, then insert toothpicks.

.Assembly Complete and Ready to Animate

Following the previous assembly diagram, insert both ends of the toothpicks into the holes on both ends of the rotating mechanism and connect them. It's done! Although there are many steps, the sense of accomplishment upon completion is immense, especially when you see the frames come to life – it's truly moving!

If you want more frames, you can also modify the file to increase the number of circles to expand the display. Doesn't it look like a lion's mane from behind (mindless Lion King fan here)! Instead of being stuck in crowds during the Lunar New Year, stay home and play together, exercising your mind and hands!
