【3D Printing Applications】Filaments Need UV Resistance Too – No More Fear of Sun Exposure and Erosion!

Just as humans need sun protection, do 3D printer filaments also need UV resistance? Industrial efficiency is evolving! No more worries about prolonged UV exposure, wind, and rain – super durable for outdoor use. The new 3D printer filaments offer exceptional mechanical properties. Free files are attached at the end of the article:

Did you know? Invisible UV rays, which affect humans all year round, also impact 3D prints. If parts and models are exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods, UV radiation can affect polymers through "photo-oxidative degradation," ultimately leading to cracking, discoloration, or even decomposition of the finished product!

We previously launched a lazy guide to 3D printer filaments (click here to view). As filament types continue to evolve, materials capable of resisting UV radiation have been progressively developed. Using UV-resistant 3D printer filaments for industrial parts that require long-term outdoor use not only combats the effects of prolonged sun exposure but also effectively withstands wind and rain.

ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate)
ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is a high-performance thermoplastic material with mechanical properties, processing performance, and chemical resistance similar to common ABS filaments. The difference is that ASA materials contain stabilizers, fundamentally altering their outdoor durability and toughness. In addition to excellent anti-static properties, ASA can also effectively resist the external forces of UV radiation.

Parts made with ASA have a very smooth surface, making them suitable for heat sinks in ventilation ducts to test and regulate fan airflow. Its high weather resistance and UV resistance make it ideal for manufacturing tent connection parts, ensuring stable and long-lasting equipment use.

Parts made with UV-resistant materials will not yellow or stain after long-term use, and their mechanical properties, strength, elasticity, and hardness will remain consistently stable!

Now, you can directly download various filament configuration parameters from the Ultimaker Marketplace. By importing the data into Ultimaker Cura, it can be easily used with Ultimaker 3D printers, significantly improving the stability of 3D printing. (After downloading the configuration file, in the Cura interface: Settings > Materials > Select Nozzle > Manage Materials, click the import button, then select the configuration file to import.)
