【3D Printing】What is the Gold Award-winning work of the 2023 RF Taiwan International Model Exhibition?
Want to know how to win one of Taiwan's most prestigious 3D model sculpting competitions? This article will introduce Phrozen's discussion with the gold award winner about the creative process that led to winning the gold medal in the 3D category of the 11th RF Taiwan International Model Exhibition!

If you're a true resin model enthusiast, you've probably heard of RF Exhibitions.
As one of Taiwan's most extensive and comprehensive annual resin statue exhibitions, it not only showcases some of the most intricate and stunning works from around the world but also hosts the highly competitive 3D sculpting competition. This year, we had the privilege of witnessing the rise of an extraordinary talent: AX Digital Art, also known as Alex.
Although relatively new to the industry, this rising Taiwanese designer is undoubtedly passionate about 3D modeling. His models "Bobbit Worm" and "Water Bear" won first place and the gold award in the 3D category of the 11th RF Pioneer Cup Prototype Competition in 2023!

Phrozen reached out to Alex to learn more about his passion and how he managed to win the competition with less than 3 years of 3D modeling experience.
Encounter: 3D Modeling and 3D Printing
Phrozen's CEO, Ray Wu, once said that he created his own 3D printer brand because what was on the market was too out of reach. Similarly, many 3D printing enthusiasts begin their journey simply because they can't find what they want on the market, and Alex is no exception.
He first started his journey into 3D models and statues through Garage Kit (GK models), and quickly realized that the amount of detail in each model was simply astonishing. The detail and quality of display models like the P1S caught his attention, but none truly matched his style. Furthermore, they were much more expensive than his budget allowed. So, when he first considered the possibilities of a 4K 3D printer, a whole new world opened up before his eyes.
Two and a half years ago, Alex embarked on his journey into the world of 3D model sculpting, quickly developing a strong interest in horror and creature themes. Despite Alex's relatively short time in the field, he has demonstrated exceptional skill and an innate understanding of digital sculpting (primarily using ZBrush). His dedication to continuous learning and exchanging ideas has made him a well-known figure among Taiwanese designers.

Drawing inspiration from soul games and horror zombie films, Alex characterizes his style as dark, grotesque, and terrifying. He gives an example that while some people might find the movie "The Thing" unsettling, he personally finds the various depictions of the human body in the film impressive.
In addition to movies and games, he is also a big fan of Japanese figure sculptors and designers such as Takayuki Takeya and Keita Okada.
Seizing the Opportunity: 2023 RFTaiwan International Model ExhibitionChampion
The horrifying yet captivating details in his models fueled his journey to the RF Exhibition. His award-winning models, "Bobbit Worm" and "Water Bear," are highly praised for their intricate realism and dynamic poses. The "Bobbit Worm" perfectly captures the eerie essence of this underwater predator, while the "Water Bear," known for its tenacious vitality, demonstrates not only Alex's technical skill but also his ability to evoke emotions through his models.
One of the biggest challenges Alex faced in this project was ensuring anatomical accuracy, especially the realistic distribution of muscles and bones. He tackled this by conducting extensive research, which allowed his work to achieve lifelike precision. This meticulous approach was particularly important for his entry, as judging criteria included not only creativity but also technical accuracy.
If you look closely at the 196 hands displayed on his award-winning model, you'll notice that each one is unique. Although advanced 3D sculpting software allows for easy replication of these hands through mirroring, Alex mentioned that the sculpted hands looked too stiff and didn't meet his preferences, so he ended up manually adjusting all of them one by one.
It was a tedious task, but now he believes the effort was worth it.
Alex's Thoughts on Phrozen and PIXUP
When it comes to 3D printers, Alex is currently an avid user of the Sonic Mighty 8K. He loves the printer's perfect balance between size, resolution, and cost-effectiveness. He had also previously tried the Sonic Mega 8K.
He also tried PIXUP and was very enthusiastic about Phrozen Verified model services. He recalled that he used to spend a lot of money learning how to add proper supports to his 3D printed models. However, the Phrozen Verified service ensures that all models are professionally checked by experts to guarantee a high success rate and reduce the risk of failure, all at an affordable price.
Since then, Alex has also uploaded his models to the PIXUP website to sell them to any 3D printing enthusiasts who wish to obtain anatomically accurate human models. Even better, you can now view and download Alex's award-winning models, Bobbit Worm and Water Bear, on PIXUP!
