【3D Printing News】UltiMaker Launches New Large 3D Printer for MakerBot SKETCH
UltiMaker, a leading brand in desktop 3D printers, announced the launch of the new MakerBot SKETCH® Large 3D printer, one of the latest additions to the MakerBot SKETCH platform. MakerBot SKETCH offers one of the most comprehensive 3D printing solutions in the education sector. It expands students' access to 3D printing, allowing them to transform their imagination into reality without being limited by 3D printer issues.

Like its predecessor, the MakerBot SKETCH Large offers accuracy and material compatibility, promoting academic 3D printing applications. The new system includes a larger build volume of 220 x 200 x 250mm, meaning up to 10 student projects can be printed at once, allowing teachers to prioritize education over continuous manual printing processes.

UltiMaker's Continuous Improvement Focus
Before the merger of Ultimaker and MakerBot, both companies operated independently, each building their own line of desktop 3D printers. Ultimaker developed a series of advanced Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) systems, including the Ultimaker S2+ Connect, Ultimaker S3, Ultimaker S5, and Ultimaker S5 Pro.

These devices have applications in both industrial and academic fields. 3D Metalforge established an Ultimaker print farm in 2020, and Ultimaker donated several printers to schools last year. Before the merger, Ultimaker also tended to market its products as a profitable 3D printing portfolio and launched multiple software solutions to support this portfolio, such as Ultimaker Essentials.

Meanwhile, MakerBot launched the METHOD, Replicator+, and SKETCH series, with the SKETCH series specifically designed to meet academic teaching needs. Like Ultimaker, MakerBot has long supported STEM education programs by donating machines, most recently in June to underserved communities in the US. With the merger of the two companies, they now appear to remain focused on educational 3D printing and expanding their joint product offerings in this field.

Nadav Goshen, CEO of UltiMaker, said: "3D printing is more than just a printer. Our goal is to provide teachers and students with the tools and resources they need to unleash their creativity and unlock learning possibilities. That's why we continue to improve our educational ecosystem—aiming to be the most comprehensive and mature 3D printing solution on the market specifically for educators."

New, Larger MakerBot SKETCH Large
The MakerBot SKETCH Large is not only larger than before, allowing students to conduct experiments on a grander scale, but it can also be shipped in heavy-duty packaging. It can be used as a standalone unit or as a two-printer classroom set. Each Large comes with three spools of easy-to-print MakerBot PLA, theoretically enough to last an entire semester.

Each printer comes with an additional build plate, spatula, and scissors, as well as the MakerBot Certified Training program, one teacher license, and 15 student licenses. This software primarily helps users maximize the use of the 3D printer, including a comprehensive curriculum plan for teachers to follow and "interactive design thinking" courses for students.

In terms of hardware, the MakerBot SKETCH Large also features a fully enclosed design, a particulate filter, a heated flexible build plate, a touchscreen, and a layer resolution of 100–400 microns. As UltiMaker hopes, it allows users to confidently print large projects, ensuring model accuracy and consistency.

In terms of software, the MakerBot Sketch Large primarily works with MakerBot CloudPrint, a print preparation and classroom management application. Users can access the Thingiverse education resource library from MakerBot Education, which currently contains hundreds of lesson plans and projects for all grades and subjects, as well as an active community of educators.
