[3D Printing] Prusa Core One: Efficient and Reliable Consumer-Grade Product

The Prusa Core One retains its slightly industrial appearance, but its design is more refined, a characteristic not found in traditional frame bed slings.
The CORE One offers ultra-fast CoreXY printing with the same quality consumers expect from the MK4S, while also providing an upgrade path, making it the best choice for any professional seeking a 3D printing solution.

The Core One is the next generation CoreXY 3D printer from Original Prusa, and the first proper consumer-grade machine, with a suggested retail price of approximately $1,200 for the fully assembled unit. It will directly compete with the still-popular Bambu Lab X1C – but notably, it's made in Europe.

Of course, the company has released other CoreXY systems.

For example, the tool-changing type Original Prusa XL is a recommended machine in this category.

However, with a suggested retail price of approximately $2,500 for a pre-assembled unit, the XL is clearly a machine aimed at professional consumers.

It's not easy for Prusa to achieve such a price point. Additionally, MK4S owners will eventually be able to upgrade their machines for less than half the price of the Core One kit.

The Prusa Core One is an all-new, fully enclosed CoreXY 3D printer, moving away from the company's usual open-bed design.
The CORE One aims to integrate all the speed and functionality of the MK4S and XL into a newly developed and redesigned machine – heralding the arrival of the next era of 3D printing.
With the Core One, it takes less than 10 minutes from unboxing to powering on to starting a print, making it incredibly fast and simple.

The company's signature Nextruder tool head, with its "always perfect first layer" and other progressively improved user-friendliness, has helped eliminate the previously steep learning curve of 3D printing.
Even Wi-Fi connectivity has been simplified through the Prusa app's NFC setup process, which was launched with the MK4S in the summer of 2024.

The company's software, PrusaSlicer, is also steadily improving, even drawing inspiration from Bambu Studio to implement workflows familiar to Bambu users, such as multi-bed slicing.

Functionally, the Core One's first print is as smooth as the MK4S, requiring only a few automatic calibration procedures and minimal user involvement to test the load cell and filament sensor.

Additionally, the packaging and form factor of this machine are incredibly compact.
The large enclosures that were necessary around the MK4S were very space-consuming, whereas the new Core One fits easily into most of your shelf units.
Prusa states that the Core One takes up 50% less space than the previous combination, while its build volume has increased by 30%, which is quite remarkable.

One small detail is that the Core One's plug does not protrude directly from the back of the machine, saving valuable space.
This shows the meticulous thought the Prusa team put into how the system saves space.

Despite its smaller size, the Core One has a build volume of 220 x 250 x 270 mm, which is 30% higher than the MK4S, and Prusa claims it's even 15-20% faster.
Slicing with PrusaSlicer and early access profiles shows that using the default 0.20 mm "SPEED" profile and Prusament PLA, the estimated speed increase for sample parts is approximately 13% - 6 hours 33 minutes, down from 7 hours 35 minutes.
Printing a Benchy is reduced from 36 minutes to 33 minutes, about 8% faster (which includes cool-down heating time and pre-print checks).

One of the most popular aspects of Prusa machines is the ability to upgrade, tweak, and customize them to suit specific workflows.
While the Prusa CORE One looks much more refined than previous open-frame designs, there are still plenty of upgrade options.
It supports the MMU3 for multi-material printing and includes a new GPIO expansion board for integrating accessories like active LEDs and wired DSLR camera triggers.

The two main design features of the Core One are: first, it is a CoreXY machine; second, it features a fully enclosed frame.
The enclosure uses solid steel profiles to ensure rigidity. Meanwhile, Prusa has chosen a durable polymer for the door and sides, rather than glass, stating that this material is stronger and safer than the glass alternatives used in many high-end 3D printers.
Another point is that the XY gantry is made of steel, rather than a steel and aluminum mix, to ensure no discrepancies due to thermal expansion.

A feature of this design is that the door can open 180°, allowing easy access.
Additionally, you can flip the door's position, so it can switch from opening left-to-right to right-to-left, allowing you to adapt to your workspace layout.

Prusa introduced powerful cooling capabilities for the Nextruder with the MK4S, and these have been carried over to the Core One, which performs exceptionally well with a 75° overhang capacity.
By printing the Scandic Plate durability test using Prusament Galaxy PLA, the results were as impressive as with the MK4S.

It's reasonable to worry that an enclosure might negatively affect the performance of low-temperature materials like PLA, but the Core One features active chamber temperature control, thanks to its dual enclosure fans and top vents.
The company stated at the Core One's Formnext presentation that during testing, the internal temperature remained at 27 ºC with the lab doors closed.
This feature will free you from having to remember to open the printer door and top cover.

When looking at the CORE One's print head, it appears very similar to the one on the MK4S, largely because the cooling system provides the same 360° airflow.
As a result, it is again equipped with a high-flow nozzle, capable of meeting the printer's high-speed demands.

The CORE One's design is entirely new, highlighting a shift in Prusa's approach to 3D printer design first seen in the XL.
This is a clear evolution that meets many users' expectations through its fully enclosed CoreXY design and multi-material compatibility.
