【FormBox Vacuum Applications】DIY face mask with replaceable and washable filters!
Are you still unable to get a mask after the implementation of the mask rationing system 3.0, with the COVID-19 (Wuhan pneumonia) pandemic still raging? Don't worry, the "FormBox vacuum former" can quickly produce protective face masks, effectively reducing usage and providing the same great filtration! The steps are simple and super convenient. Prepare three materials:
1. 3D printed mask outer and inner shell models (download link at the end of the article)
2. Vacuum-formed inner shell and filter mesh outer shell
3. Replaceable mask filter fabric

We used an Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle 3D printer to create the mask model, and a FormBox vacuum former to create the mask shell. After placing the material sheet into the FormBox for heating and then pressing down, the mask mold can be completed in just a few seconds!

During the FormBox vacuum forming process, you can gently press the edges of the object to make the material sheet and the model fit more closely. Please note that the temperature of the ceramic heater (160°C - 340°C) will heat up the material sheet. You can use a pencil or a handkerchief to operate it to avoid getting burned!

After vacuum forming, use an ultrasonic cutter or a utility knife to cut out the shape of the two 3D mask material sheets. Then, cut the filter fabric and elastic cords from a regular mask. One mask can provide two filter fabrics, and the elastic cords can also be reused with the vacuum-formed mask.

The inner layer of the mask will be in direct contact with your face for extended periods, so material selection is crucial! We used FormBox's food-safe and human-contact-certified transparent cast sheets for the inner layer and white material sheets for the outer layer. After vacuum forming, the prototype can be easily removed, and both material sheets fit perfectly.

Once all materials are ready, secure the inner and outer layers of the mask and the filter fabric with elastic cords, and you're done!
