【3D Printing Case Study】A direct look at "Club 5-五哥毒窟"! From model agency to customized exports!

3D printers create new business opportunities! "Club 5-五哥毒窟" is a local Taiwanese company that started by selling simulated remote control car models. The model cars they represent not only have realistic appearances, but also pay great attention to climbing functions and off-road performance, making them high-end toys for adults.
3DMart was honored to visit their headquarters and interview them about their successful experience in self-developing products for domestic and international sales after using Ultimaker 3D printers in recent years!

The company has an internal testing ground for rock crawlers, with meticulous attention to detail in both the realistic scenery and climbing difficulty. The entire display area is filled with various car models and shells, presenting a rugged industrial style, more like a crazy collector's space.

(The rock crawler testing ground perfectly simulates a real outdoor environment.)

(In addition to the main rock crawler models, the display area also features various remote control off-road vehicles, gas-powered cars, and monster trucks of different scales.)

"When you see it, you want to modify it." The founder expressed the aspirations of many "big boys," and it all started with this passion. Initially, they modified out of interest, and the creativity in the process led to the demand for customized parts, realized through 3D printers, while also incorporating new design elements. The emergence of 3D printers brought new opportunities for product development.

(Even the subtle differences in accessories between different model years are meticulously reproduced.)

After they started using Ultimaker 3D printers, their independently developed modification accessories have been continuously sold to overseas markets, with exquisite details that are irresistible. The products emphasize fidelity from the interior to the exterior, meticulously focusing on the authenticity of every detail, from various car models to different model years.

(The exterior is no longer just flat stickers; even small parts like handles and exhaust pipes can be produced and modified using 3D printers.)

"Because the initial freedom and time for development were sufficient, the main difficulties were mold costs and prototype replacement." The design manager mentioned that in addition to excessively high mold costs, design and development were also the most challenging parts. 3D printers, as excellent auxiliary tools, need to operate smoothly. After reviewing various evaluations and user recommendations, they chose the Ultimaker 3D printer for its stable printing and good quality.

In its early days, "Club 5-五哥毒窟" mainly imported and sold models in Taiwan. With the addition of 3D printers, they were able to develop and produce their own products, gradually expanding the market for modified parts, and even selling them overseas. To date, these modified parts account for 50% of their total revenue, compared to simply selling simulated car models.

(Products directly produced, developed, and packaged for shipment using 3D printers.)

So far, after introducing their first Ultimaker 3D printer, they now own one Ultimaker 2+ and four Ultimaker 3s, and use them very efficiently. For product development and design phases, they use the dual-extrusion system of the Ultimaker 3, which simplifies post-processing of supports. Once the design is finalized, they use the Ultimaker 2+ for mass production. This approach allows both production and development processes to run smoothly simultaneously.

(To date, they have five Ultimaker 3D printers constantly in production.)

Not only the appearance and styling, but also the vehicle's performance is within their modification scope, requiring an understanding of the internal body structure. Therefore, these 3D printers are also used to develop items such as body weighting parts or functional modification parts for the interior of the vehicle.

(The special "Magical Light" is installed inside the car body, lighting up immediately upon installation.)

Finally, we also asked them about the improvements they hope to see in 3D printers and their services. The design manager stated: "Currently, existing functions meet our needs, but we hope that in the future, it will be possible to increase the printing volume to be larger than that of the Ultimaker 3." After owning five Ultimakers, the printing volume of the Ultimaker S5 perfectly meets their size requirements. (Further reading: Ultimaker S5 large-scale test achieved!)
