When using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing technology to create complex or overhanging objects, as the process involves layering, material in overhangs will sag due to gravity. Therefore, auxiliary structures called "supports" are added to the overhanging areas and are removed from the finished product afterward.
