【3DEVO】Filament Maker Two Drives Custom 3D Printing Filament Production
Dutch technology company 3devo has launched the Filament Maker Two, designed to enable users to produce their own 3D printing filament from pellets or powder, while enhancing stability, efficiency, and customization.
For years, 3devo has been manufacturing compact filament makers, establishing its equipment as a cornerstone for polymer and filament companies worldwide. 3devo's machines allow these companies to produce small batches of innovative filaments for testing, research, and development.

Filament Maker Two
Developed based on feedback from original Filament Maker ONE users, this new machine features significant technical upgrades to address the challenges of filament extrusion.
The Filament Maker Two aims to improve upon several aspects.
Key enhancements include a powerful drive system that combines new stepper motors and a gearbox, delivering up to three times the torque and ensuring minimal RPM fluctuations.
This results in extremely stable rotation rates, reducing inconsistencies in filament quality.
An extended extruder screw, 50 mm longer, allows for optimal mixing and flow stability, leading to a more consistent filament diameter.
The longer screw also creates a thermal break between the heated zone and the hopper, preventing premature melting and maintaining a steady material flow.
Coupled with automatic filament tensioning, the Filament Maker Two can produce 3 kg spools of filament.
The Filament Maker Two's intuitive touchscreen interface provides easier control, offering relevant extrusion data, notifications, and guidance.
Advanced monitoring features include a 3-axis optical sensor that measures filament ovality and diameter with a precision of 10 microns.
This sensor detects spool ovality and provides thermal measurements to maintain optimal temperature stability during extrusion.
"The Filament Maker TWO is designed for faster R&D, enabling our customers to produce high-quality filaments perfectly suited to their needs," says Louis Rinaldo, a materials specialist with over seven years of experience at 3devo.
He continues, "The Filament Maker TWO addresses the need for stability, efficiency, and customization in filament extrusion. To make a tangible impact in plastic recycling and filament extrusion, 3devo's latest machine is poised to make more material projects successful."
He emphasizes that the new stepper motors provide stable screw rotation, leading to faster stabilization of the molten material flow and reducing the time spent fine-tuning settings.
The machine's design allows for internal maintenance and features easily removable components such as nozzles and screws.
This facilitates quick troubleshooting and repairs, eliminating the need to return the equipment to the manufacturer, thereby reducing downtime and improving long-term reliability.
An open-source API allows users to integrate their own development projects, enabling the system to adapt to future enhancements based on user feedback.
Thermal sensors also help ensure the filament is at the optimal winding temperature.
3devo states that image processing capabilities, expected to be released in 2025, will help users detect defects or flaws.
Users control the machine via a 7-inch touchscreen, and its software is built on an open-source API.
3devo states that internal components are easily accessible for maintenance, replacement, or upgrades.
The equipment also features advanced data logging capabilities and has been tested with materials such as PLA, ABS, PC, PS, PETG, TPU, TPE, PPS, PVA, PE, PET, PA6, PA12, PA66, PEEK, PEKK, and other PAEK series materials.
Advances in Filament Technology and Drying Solutions
Italian company Xenia Materials also continues to advance filament technology, launching new high-performance filaments at Formnext 2024.
Xenia's 3DF Materials division, specializing in thermoplastic composites, introduced four filaments designed for industries requiring lightweight, structural, and sustainable materials.
A notable product is XECARB® SL 3DF, a carbon fiber-reinforced PA11 composite that offers enhanced strength while maintaining low density.
These materials are designed to meet the complex needs of industries such as aerospace and automotive, where structural integrity and weight reduction are paramount.
German manufacturer BigRep released the DRYCON 3D printing filament dryer, addressing filament quality from a different angle.
This new system is suitable for industrial users working with high-performance and moisture-sensitive materials, and features dual chambers capable of simultaneously drying, storing, and annealing spools and parts.
By maintaining optimal drying conditions, it aims to improve print quality, reduce extrusion issues, and enhance the mechanical strength of printed parts.
The ability to anneal parts directly in the chamber also helps release internal stress, improving dimensional accuracy and layer adhesion.
Meanwhile, 3Devo's Plastic Shredder GP20 can recycle plastics of any shape and size into pellet-sized 3D printing materials.
This dual design combines an intelligent plastic shredder with an integrated granulator, allowing you to focus on your needs, and the shredder's functionality gives you the freedom and flexibility to integrate it into any project in any industry.
